Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert
St-Guilhem-le-Désert consists of one long, narrow street with cosy shops and inns for pilgrims heading for Compostela. The mounting alley leads to a charming central square dominated by a huge sycamore tree and the austere Gellone Abbey Church. Its location along the Hérault Gorges, enclosed by high cliffs, its well-maintained houses and the fact you hear and see water everywhere, make this village unique. And when you make sure you arrive before the hordes of tourists (i.e. in the morning), it's a wonderful place. In high season you can always take a free shuttle from Pont du Diable (at the entrance of the Hérault Gorges) to St-Guilhem-le-Désert. The shuttle also halts at Grotte de Clamouse.
