Carcassonne
Carcassonne is perhaps the medieval city that captures everyone's imagination to the fullest. And indeed, from a distance the walled-in city makes a majestic picture. But in summer it gets too crowded inside the walls, especially from midday onwards. Parking is no problem though, there are ample parking facilities. But once inside the walls hordes of people shuffle through the narrow, medieval alleys to get a glimpse of the shop windows of far too many souvenir and candy shops. You'd better look for the more spacious spots to trace back your first impressions of the city's unique character. And they can be found at the castle, the basilica or strolling between the two ramparts.
Some good advice: when you visit Carcassonne in high season go in the early morning or at dusk, or visit it in mid season.
