Bassin de Thau
Between Sète and Agde lies Bassin de Thau. In this vast lagoon, only separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow isthmus, oyster-farming is one of the most important activities.
Bassin de Thau is surrounded by a number of places of interest.
From Mont St-Clair, a 170m-high hill, there are 2 magnificent panoramic views: one at Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette overlooking the (too) busy harbour town of Sète, and the other in the Parc panoramique des Pierres Blanches overlooking Bassin de Thau.
On the other side of Bassin de Tau lies Cap-d'Agde. Its large marina and Aquarium Marin are two of its popular tourist attractions. A bit further inland lies Agde.
On the northern banks of Bassin de Thau you can visit the charming harbour towns of Marseillan and Mèze. You can taste all the delicious dishes the sea offers and drink a glass of fresh white wine, e.g. the local Picpoul-de-Pinet!
Mèze is the first-rate oyster-farming centre and attracts many tourists to its port and narrow streets. In the neighbourhood of Mèze traces have been found of dinosaurs (Musée-parc des Dinosaures) and of Romans (Villa Loupian).
In Marseillan you can visit the picturesque harbour and also the Noilly-Prat wine cellars.
Can be combined with: Valmagne Abbey, Pézenas, the nice beaches between Sète and Cap-d'Agde.
